Truck accident in Pennsylvania leaves man dead

Pennsylvania drivers often hear about the importance of being alert around big rigs. Tractor trailers frequently carry enormous loads that make them difficult to stop suddenly. Recently a tractor trailer was at the center of an accident involving seven vehicles. The driver told police he saw the light turn yellow but was unable to stop his heavy load because his brakes were hot. He claimed to have stopped the truck an hour earlier to let the smoking brakes cool down. Witnesses say the truck plowed through the intersection, striking a pickup truck and slamming it into the concrete base of a lamppost. The collision caused a chain reaction with other vehicles.

For over an hour, rescuers worked to free the driver from the wreckage of his pickup truck, but the 67-year-old man died at the hospital. The road was closed for over six hours while police reconstructed the accident. The driver of the big rig was charged with vehicular homicide, speeding, reckless driving and failure to stop for a red light.

The family of the deceased man may now be dealing with many hardships. Funeral expenses and medical bills may be just the beginning.
