The frightening reality of bus accidents

As the school year drew to a close, a group of high school seniors embarked on a class trip. Accompanied by three chaperones, the students boarded a charter bus in their small town, and began their journey to a big city. They began to make their way through Pennsylvania, drawing ever nearer to their destination. They certainly must not have expected the nightmare that was about to unfold. Though buses are a common way for a large group of people to travel together, bus accidents can be especially devastating because of the large number of lives at stake. 

Unfortunately, as the bus neared a rest stop, the driver lost control. He struck a light post, and the bus full of children careened off the road and came to rest 40 feet down in a ravine. Sixteen people were injured in the crash. Several of them suffered injuries so serious that they were visibly limping a week later when they walked the stage to be awarded their diplomas.

Charges were filed against the driver for failing to drive within a single lane. More charges may be pending because Pennsylvania police determined that in the aftermath of the crash, cash, electronics, and personal belongings were stolen from luggage on the bus. The incident is currently under investigation. 

Though most parents never expect that their children may be injured in bus accidents, the grim reality is that they do occur. What was meant to be a reward for years of hard work on the part of the students became a frightening ordeal in a matter of seconds. Not only were some of the children seriously injured, but they were also the victims of theft.
