1 dead following car accident in Pennsylvania

A Pittsburgh man has died following a serious car wreck in Elk County, local police have reported. Pennsylvania police are considering charges against the driver involved in the car accident, who is suspected of having been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. The investigation is still underway as of this report.

Sources have confirmed the 44-year-old man was traveling with the 22-year-old driver, who was driving westbound at a high rate of speed. The driver is believed to have lost control of the car which left the road and struck an embankment, sending the vehicle into the air. It landed on its roof. The driver is said to have been wearing a seat belt, but his three passengers were not.

The driver suffered unknown injuries and was transported to a local hospital for a blood test to confirm officers’ suspicions of intoxication. He has also been charged with driving too fast for road conditions. One passenger was killed outright; a second, a 44-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. The third, a 23-year-old man, was apparently uninjured and refused treatment at the scene of the accident.

If it is determined the driver was drunk at the time of the car accident, a DUI charge will likely be added to the existing charge. In addition, the family of the deceased passenger and the other injured passenger will be given the opportunity to file wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits against the driver in Pennsylvania civil court. Evidence brought forth in the criminal trial may be offered to support these civil cases.
