82-year-old man dies in Pennsylvania car accident

A serious accident on Route 115 in Ross Township has left one man dead, according to local sources. Pennsylvania State Police responded to the car accident at approximately 11:30 a.m. on the morning of May 5. So far, no charges have been filed in the tragic crash.

According to several eyewitnesses, a 68-year-old man was driving a pickup truck northbound behind a station wagon at the same time the 82-year-old victim was headed south in a sedan. When the station wagon stopped to negotiate a left-hand turn, the pickup truck driver appeared to try and go around it, only to pull out into oncoming traffic. The pickup truck and the sedan collided head-on.

The sedan was launched into the air, and severe damage was suffered by both vehicles. Police and fire services responded to the crash, but the elder driver did not survive. He was pronounced dead by a coroner some time after 11:30. The other driver was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries of an indeterminate severity. He has not yet been charged, but the police investigation into the crash is still underway.

If it becomes clear through the course of the police investigation that the younger driver was in some way behaving recklessly or negligently in the operation of his vehicle at the time of the car accident, he could be held criminally liable for the death of the other man. In either case, Pennsylvania law dictates the deceased man’s family is entitled to file for wrongful death in a civil court. Evidence suggesting the other driver was at least in part responsible for the crash will be required if monetary damages are to be paid out by the civil court.
