Grandmother dies in bizarre car accident

A Pennsylvania woman perished after a car crashed through the wall of her first-story bedroom. Authorities say the 86-year-old grandmother of 13 and great-grandmother of 14 was sleeping in her bed when the driver of a speeding car lost control, causing the vehicle to become airborne. The car accident occurred in Franconia Township.

Authorities said a 21-year-old man lost control of his car after reaching speeds of 80 mph or more. The driver missed a curve and jumped a curb where it became airborne, vaulting 21 feet into the side of a house. Prosecutors compared his driving to that of a death-defying stunt from an action movie. The impact of the crash crushed the woman, who lay sleeping in her bed against an interior wall. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was arrested after being transported to Lehigh Valley Trauma Center for treatment. He is now facing multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, DUI and reckless endangerment. Tests showed his blood alcohol content to be .172, over twice the legal limit. The car was inspected and showed no mechanical problems. A Montgomery County District Attorney said that the man used his car as a lethal weapon and killed an innocent woman.
