Man charged in connection with car accident in Pennsylvania

A 12-year-old boy has been hospitalized once again due to injuries he incurred in a violent accident last year. The car accident, which took place on Sept. 13, has been blamed on street racing by Pennsylvania law enforcement. The driver has now been charged with aggravated assault by motor vehicle along with several related charges.

According to the accident report, the 20-year-old man smashed at a high rate of speed into a vehicle driven by the boy’s mother. As a result of the impact, the boy was ejected from the vehicle, landing in the busy road. His breathing stopped, and he suffered serious injuries to his right leg. He was also later discovered to have suffered brain damage.

The accused man was arraigned and released on unsecured bail after being charged  with assault by vehicle, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, speeding and racing. He was set to make his first court appearance on March 24. He will answer not only for the injuries suffered by the boy, but also by the other individuals injured in the crash.

Should the man be found guilty of the criminal charges against him, he may face jail time for his role in the car accident. However, even if he does not, the injured parties and the family of the boy are entitled under Pennsylvania law to file personal injury lawsuits against him apart from the criminal charges. These suits are handled civilly, and the standard of proof required is substantially less than what is necessary in criminal court.
