1 dead following Pennsylvania car accident

A local woman has tragically died after a crash on Sept. 5, according to police sources. The woman was killed in a car accident on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Police have confirmed that two vehicles were involved in the accident and are currently seeking the whereabouts of the other driver involved.

The Deputy Coroner on the scene confirmed that the 23-year-old woman, who was in a vehicle that flipped as a result of the accident, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The specifics of what caused the car to flip are still being investigated, but police have no reason to believe the deceased woman was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Apparently the other vehicle involved fled the scene.

The vehicle is described as a sedan with damage to its rear. So far, no leads have been uncovered, and police have asked for community support in bringing this driver in for questioning. While it cannot be confirmed that the other driver was responsible for the crash, leaving the scene of an accident is still considered a crime under Pennsylvania law. As a result it seems likely the driver will face charges at least pertaining to that issue.

If the police investigation reveals the driver who fled did play a role in causing the car accident, that driver may face additional criminal charges. However, even if no criminal charges are filed, the family of the deceased woman will be entitled to file a wrongful death suit against him or her in a civil court setting. Pennsylvania civil law requires that at least some evidence linking negligence on the part of that driver to the crash in a claim for financial damages.
