2 injured in car accident in Pennsylvania; DUI suspected

Police are working to determine whether one or both drivers involved in a two-vehicle accident on the night of July 3 were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, according to local news sources. The car accident, which happened on I-95 in Pennsylvania, sent both drivers to the hospital. No passengers were involved in the crash.

Reports indicate that a northbound vehicle may have been speeding when it passed mile marker 41.5 and rear-ended another vehicle. The second vehicle was rammed into a pole and then down an embankment, while the first vehicle ended up on the shoulder of the road. Emergency first responders had to extricate one of the two drivers involved from their vehicle, though it is not clear which driver had to be moved.

Both drivers were transported to a local hospital with indeterminate injuries. Police have intimated that alcohol and high speed may have played a role in the crash, which means they may have requested toxicology scans of both drivers. The investigation is still underway as of this report, and so far no charges have been filed against either driver.

If Pennsylvania police determine one or both drivers were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the car accident, criminal charges will likely be filed. If, however, only one of the drivers is found culpable for the crash, the other driver will be entitled under state law to file a personal injury suit against the other driver. This suit would be presided over in civil court using evidence garnered from the criminal case.
