Family of car accident victim speaks to judge before sentencing
When a Pennsylvania motor vehicle collision results in fatality, it is devastating for friends and family members of the victim. Coping with the sudden death of a loved one is difficult because family members have zero time to prepare such as they might in a case of terminal illness, for instance. Loved ones and friends of a 19-year-old girl who was killed in a car accident last year recently spoke in court before the judge sentenced the man deemed responsible for her death.
The girl had been driving along a highway just moments before her fatal injuries occurred. A vehicle from an opposing lane suddenly veered over the yellow line and smashed into her car. The person behind the wheel of that vehicle was later determined to have a blood alcohol content level that was twice the legal limit.
On a recent Tuesday, the judge and everyone present in court listened as the decedent’s friend and family members spoke of her kindness. They told the court that she had a bright future ahead and that they believe the man responsible for her death should get the maximum penalty Pennsylvania law allows for his crime. The judge sentenced him to 4-8 years behind bars, followed by several years of probation and mandatory public speaking to school students regarding the dangers of drunk driving.
There is always a risk for collision when traveling by motor vehicle. However, someone injured by another driver’s negligence should not be burdened with medical bills and other expenses associated with the incident. Anyone injured in a car accident or who has lost an immediate family member in an alcohol-related collision may speak to an experienced attorney to learn more about how to seek financial recovery for their losses in court.
