Family of brain-injured man settles medical malpractice lawsuit

Medical malpractice can forever alter the lives of those who it touches. It can be especially difficult to trust in a medical provider only to have that provider’s apparent mistake lead to serious injuries. Pennsylvania residents who have been victimized by medical malpractice and are considering what legal options they have might be interested to hear of one recent settlement reached by the family of a brain injured man.

The man reportedly went through surgery to treat his testicular cancer in April 2010. Tragically, he suffered a hemorrhage and cardiac failure during the surgery. He was then left in a vegetative state after the complications suffered in his surgery.

His family brought a medical malpractice lawsuit against the medical center where he was treated. Recently, the family and medical center reached a settlement in the reported amount of $1.25 million. This includes a lump sum amount that will be paid out to the man’s mother and her family, along with a smaller amount that will go to fund a trust which will be established to make periodic payments to the man’s family.

The family is reportedly satisfied with the settlement that they reached. While it will not restore their loved one to the condition he was in before his brain injury, this medical malpractice settlement should help them provide for the man financially in the future. As many Pennsylvania residents know, medical costs can be quite significant. In this particular case there will likely also be other costs associated with caring for the man who is now locked in a vegetative state.
