1 dead, 3 injured in Pennsylvania car accident

A 20-year-old man is dead following a serious crash in Quincy Township on the night of May 11, according to local police sources. The investigation into the car accident that also sent three other young people, including the driver, to a Pennsylvania hospital is still ongoing. Police suspect that speed may have played a role in the accident, though no charges have yet been filed in association with this case.

Police believe the 19-year-old driver may have been traveling faster than he should have been when he attempted to round a curve on Tomstown Road. It appears that he lost control of the vehicle, which smashed into a guard rail and a concrete culvert before coming to rest in a driveway. All four passengers in the car were ejected upon striking the guard rail.

The driver, along with a 16-year-old passenger and another passenger of indeterminate age, were airlifted to area hospitals with injuries described as severe. There has been no word on their status as of this report. The 20-year-old passenger was declared dead at the scene of the accident by arriving medical personnel. Police have not filed formal charges against the driver, likely pending his release from the hospital.

A tragic car accident of this type is made all the more so by the understanding that the accident could have been avoided. If Pennsylvania police determine that the driver was indeed speeding at the time of the crash, he could be held criminally liable for the injuries and fatality incurred in the accident. Additionally, the family of the deceased victim may choose to file a wrongful death suit against the driver. The injured parties would have the same option should they wish to pursue personal injury suits as well.
