2 dead, including 1 cop, in Pennsylvania car accident
A car crash involving two vehicles has claimed two lives, according to local sources. The car accident, which happened on Aug. 20, also injured two other individuals. The driver who apparently caused the accident was apparently a Pennsylvania police officer who was currently off-duty at the time of the crash.
According to the accident report and accompanying video, the 41-year-old officer was traveling westbound with his teenage son when the accident occurred. Apparently the officer attempted to negotiate a right-hand turn and lost control of his vehicle, moving into the eastbound lanes and striking another vehicle headed in that direction. The second vehicle was carrying two individuals.
Pennsylvania State Police have reported that all four individuals were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, but that both the officer and his son were killed in the impact. The driver and passenger in the other vehicle suffered injuries of unknown severity and were taken to local hospitals for treatment. So far, police have not speculated about what might have caused the officer to lose control of his vehicle. Their investigation is ongoing.
The injured driver and passenger from the vehicle that was struck are entitled to file personal injury suits in Pennsylvania against the estate of the officer who was driving at the time of the car accident. It is necessary in such civil cases to have evidence pointing to culpability on the part of the driver, but no criminal conviction or charges are necessary to initiate a civil suit. The surviving family of the police officer and his son would typically look to the policy for the car that the officer was driving at the time of the fatal accident for insurance coverage regarding the police officer and his son.
