Car accident in Pennsylvania injures bicyclist

An individual is in critical condition following a serious accident in Bensalem, according to local sources. Pennsylvania authorities responded to a car accident involving one vehicle and one bicycle. So far, police have not filed charges against the driver involved in the crash, but an investigation is ongoing at this time.

The report is very limited in terms of details about the crash, but it has been confirmed that the unidentified bicyclist is currently in critical condition at a local hospital. Little is known about what predicated the accident, which happened around 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 4 in front of a local middle school. It is unknown if the cyclist was a student at the school.

The driver has not been arrested but did stay at the scene and is said to be cooperating with the ongoing police investigation. Police have not publicly speculated about what may have caused the crash, but they have not ruled out recklessness or negligence on the part of the driver. At the time of this report, no further information has become available.

Generally speaking, while bicycles are considered vehicles, Pennsylvania law dictates that a driver must be aware of his or her own immediate area and drive accordingly. If police prove that the driver was negligent in a way that directly contributed to the car accident, charges may be filed. Even if they are not, the bicyclist is entitled to file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver. Evidence of negligence and/or recklessness would be required for a civil court to consider financial compensation.
